DanaHaynes's Music Collectibles 5-18 Pigeonhed
Pigeonhed is an American alternative rock band formed in 1993 in Seattle, Washington. The band was originally the project of producer and musician Shawn Smith (known for his work with Brad and Satchel) and multi-instrumentalist Jeff Angell (who would later go on to form Walking Papers). Combining elements of electronic music, industrial rock, and alternative, Pigeonhed’s sound is often described as a fusion of funky rhythms, distorted guitars, and soulful vocals. Their self-titled debut album, Pigeonhed (1993), received critical acclaim for its experimental approach to rock and electronic music, showcasing Smith's smooth vocal style alongside Angell's knack for creating innovative soundscapes. The album's unique blend of genres helped Pigeonhed stand out within the Seattle music scene of the early '90s, a time when grunge was at its height.
Pigeonhed followed up with their second album, The Full Sentence (1997), which continued to explore the fusion of electronic beats and rock, though with a more polished and experimental sound. Despite being well-received by critics, the band never achieved mainstream success, but they maintained a loyal following due to their distinctive sound and musical experimentation. Pigeonhed's influence can be heard in the works of artists who blend alternative rock with electronic music. After a long hiatus, Shawn Smith continued his musical career through other projects, but Pigeonhed’s innovative contributions to Seattle’s alternative music scene remain a memorable part of the genre’s evolution.
