DanaHaynes's Music Collectibles 5-19 Citizen King
Citizen King was an American alternative rock band formed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1995. The group blended elements of rock, funk, ska, and hip-hop, crafting a distinctive sound that was both eclectic and accessible. Their breakthrough came in 1999 with the release of their debut album Mobile Estates, which featured the hit single "Better Days (And the Bottom Drops Out)." This song became a popular radio staple, known for its catchy hook and upbeat rhythm, and helped the band gain widespread recognition. Citizen King’s music was characterized by a mix of smooth vocals, funky bass lines, and experimental instrumentation, making them a standout in the late '90s alternative scene.
Despite the success of "Better Days," Citizen King struggled to maintain momentum, facing issues with label support and internal band dynamics. Their second album, 2 A.M. Wake Up Call (2002), was released after a period of significant lineup changes but failed to replicate the success of their earlier work. The band disbanded shortly afterward, and its members moved on to other projects. Though Citizen King’s time in the spotlight was brief, their blend of alternative rock and eclectic influences left a lasting impact on fans, and "Better Days" remains a nostalgic anthem for many who grew up listening to late '90s alternative music.
