W.A.S.P. is an American heavy metal band formed in 1982 by guitarist and vocalist Blackie Lawless in Los Angeles, California. Known for their theatrical live performances, provocative lyrics, and shock rock image, W.A.S.P. gained significant attention in the 1980s, particularly with the release of their self-titled debut album in 1984. The band’s early music was characterized by raw, aggressive riffs and Lawless's powerful, often controversial lyrics. With songs like “I Wanna Be Somebody” and “L.O.V.E. Machine,” W.A.S.P. became one of the key players in the glam metal scene, though their darker, more rebellious edge set them apart from other bands of the era. The band’s use of elaborate stage props, wild costumes, and controversial imagery helped establish their identity as pioneers of the shock rock movement.
Over the years, W.A.S.P. experienced numerous lineup changes, but Blackie Lawless remained the constant force behind the band, guiding its evolution through various musical styles, from heavy metal to hard rock and even incorporating symphonic elements. Despite facing criticism and censorship, especially in the 1980s when their provocative stage antics and album artwork drew attention, W.A.S.P. maintained a loyal following and continued to release albums like The Last Command (1985), Inside the Electric Circus (1986), and The Crimson Idol (1992), the latter of which is often considered one of their most ambitious works. While they never achieved the mainstream success of some of their contemporaries, W.A.S.P. remains an influential force in the heavy metal world, known for their uncompromising attitude, boundary-pushing music, and the distinct voice of Blackie Lawless.
