DanaHaynes's Music Collectibles 1-30 Living Color
Living Colour is an American rock band formed in New York City in 1984, known for their genre-defying fusion of hard rock, funk, jazz, and punk, along with their socially conscious lyrics. The band was founded by guitarist Vernon Reid, and its original lineup also included vocalist Corey Glover, bassist Muzz Skillings, and drummer Will Calhoun. Living Colour first gained significant attention with the release of their debut album, Vivid (1988), which was praised for its innovative sound and its blending of diverse musical styles. The album produced the hit single "Cult of Personality," which became an anthem for the band and earned them a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. Vivid was groundbreaking in its exploration of race, identity, and social issues, and it propelled Living Colour into the mainstream as one of the most unique and influential rock bands of the late '80s and early '90s.
Living Colour's subsequent albums, including Time's Up (1990) and Stain (1993), continued to push boundaries, combining hard rock with elements of funk, jazz, and rap, while maintaining a sharp focus on political and social commentary. Although the band experienced lineup changes over the years, with Muzz Skillings leaving and being replaced by Doug Wimbish, the core of the band, led by Vernon Reid, remained committed to their distinctive sound. Despite periods of inactivity and solo projects from its members, Living Colour reunited in the 2000s and continues to tour and record new music. Their innovative approach to rock music, along with their ability to address important social and cultural topics, has ensured their lasting influence on rock, funk, and metal genres. Living Colour remains a pioneering force in music, known for their virtuosic musicianship, boundary-pushing style, and bold, thought-provoking messages.
