Evanescence is an American rock band founded in 1995 by singer, pianist, and songwriter Amy Lee and guitarist Ben Moody. The band initially gained attention with their debut album, Fallen (2003), which became a global phenomenon. The album’s blend of gothic rock, nu-metal, and symphonic elements resonated with a wide audience, and its singles, such as "My Immortal," "Going Under," and the iconic "Bring Me to Life," helped define the early 2000s rock scene. Fallen went on to sell over 17 million copies worldwide and earned Evanescence two Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist. Amy Lee's haunting, classically trained vocals and the band’s heavy, orchestral sound set them apart from their peers, establishing them as one of the most successful rock bands of the era.
Following Fallen, Evanescence's lineup shifted several times, with Amy Lee remaining the constant member. Their subsequent albums, including The Open Door (2006) and Evanescence (2011), continued to explore themes of loss, personal struggle, and empowerment, though they marked a departure from the nu-metal influences of their debut. The band’s sound evolved into a more symphonic rock style, incorporating elements of classical music and electronic influences. Despite facing challenges and lineup changes over the years, including a hiatus in the mid-2010s, Evanescence has remained a prominent force in rock music. Their powerful, emotive sound, led by Lee’s vocal prowess and songwriting, continues to resonate with fans worldwide, and their 2021 album The Bitter Truth marked their return with a more alternative rock direction. Evanescence’s influence on gothic and alternative rock, combined with their commercial success, has solidified their place as one of the most iconic rock bands of the 21st century.
