DanaHaynes's Music Collectibles 3-17 Stone Temple Pilots
Stone Temple Pilots is an American rock band formed in 1989 in San Diego, California. The band originally consisted of Scott Weiland (vocals), brothers Robert DeLeo (bass) and Dean DeLeo (guitar), and Eric Kretz (drums). Drawing influences from hard rock, grunge, and alternative rock, they rose to prominence in the 1990s with their debut album Core (1992), which became a massive commercial success. The album featured hits like "Plush," "Creep," and "Sex Type Thing," which helped define the sound of the era and establish Stone Temple Pilots as one of the leading bands of the alternative rock movement. Their sound combined heavy guitar riffs with Weiland’s distinctive, sometimes haunting vocals, making them stand out amidst the grunge scene dominated by bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam.
The band’s subsequent albums, Purple (1994) and Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop (1996), continued their commercial success with tracks like "Interstate Love Song" and "Big Empty." Despite their success, the band faced internal struggles, particularly due to Scott Weiland's battles with addiction, which led to several breakups and lineup changes over the years. After Weiland’s departure, the band worked with various singers, including Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, before reuniting with Weiland in the mid-2000s. Tragically, Weiland passed away in 2015, and Stone Temple Pilots went on to recruit new lead singers, continuing to tour and release music. Their legacy remains influential in rock, and their contributions to the 1990s alt-rock scene continue to be celebrated by fans and critics alike.
