DanaHaynes's Music Collectibles 4-5 Cake
Cake is an American alternative rock band formed in Sacramento, California, in 1991. The band was founded by lead vocalist and guitarist John McCrea, along with guitarist Greg Brown, bassist Victor Damiani, drummer Todd Roper, and trumpet player Vince DiFiore. Known for their eclectic sound that blends elements of rock, funk, jazz, country, and ska, Cake quickly gained attention for their distinctive style, which is characterized by McCrea's deadpan vocal delivery, catchy guitar riffs, and the prominent use of trumpet. Their breakthrough came with their debut album, Motorcade of Generosity (1994), but it was their second album, Fashion Nugget (1996), that brought them widespread recognition. The album featured the hit single "The Distance," which became an anthem of the '90s alternative rock scene and helped the band gain a dedicated following.
Cake continued to build on their success with subsequent albums, including Prolonging the Magic (1998), Comfort Eagle (2001), and Pressure Chief (2004). Each album saw the band experimenting with different genres, while retaining their signature style and witty, observational lyrics. Comfort Eagle was particularly successful, with the single "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" becoming one of their most well-known tracks. Despite their consistent output and success, Cake has always maintained a somewhat unconventional presence in the mainstream, often opting for a more independent, DIY approach to their music and image. Their blend of humor, sharp commentary, and genre-crossing sound has kept them a unique and influential presence in alternative rock, with a loyal fanbase that continues to support their music and live performances.
