The Cranberries were an Irish rock band formed in 1989 in Limerick, Ireland, by lead vocalist and songwriter Dolores O'Riordan, guitarist Noel Hogan, bassist Mike Hogan, and drummer Fergal Lawler. The band's early sound blended alternative rock with folk and post-punk influences, but it was O'Riordan's distinctive voice and emotive lyricism that set The Cranberries apart from their peers. They rose to international fame with their debut album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? (1993), which featured hits like "Linger" and "Dreams." These tracks, with their catchy melodies and introspective themes, quickly made The Cranberries one of the most popular bands of the early '90s. Their success was solidified by their second album, No Need to Argue (1994), which included the massive hit "Zombie," a powerful protest song about the conflict in Northern Ireland.
The Cranberries continued to enjoy success throughout the '90s and early 2000s, with albums like To the Faithful Departed (1996) and Bury the Hatchet (1999) maintaining their relevance in the alternative rock and pop-rock scenes. Their music, often filled with themes of love, loss, and social issues, resonated with listeners worldwide. However, after a period of hiatus in the early 2000s, The Cranberries reunited in 2009 for a successful return with the album Roses. Tragically, Dolores O'Riordan passed away in 2018, just before a planned tour with the band. Her death marked the end of an era for The Cranberries, but their music continues to live on, with their distinctive blend of folk-rock and alternative influences cementing their place as one of the most iconic bands of the '90s.
