311 is an American rock band formed in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1988. The band is known for blending a wide array of genres, including alternative rock, reggae, funk, hip-hop, and ska, creating a unique and dynamic sound. The original lineup, which still includes vocalist/guitarist Nick Hexum, guitarist Tim Mahoney, and drummer Chad Sexton, began by playing locally before gaining attention with their energetic live shows and diverse musical influences. Their breakthrough came with the release of their third studio album, 311 (1995), which featured the hit singles "Down" and "All Mixed Up." The album achieved significant commercial success, marking the beginning of the band's rise to mainstream recognition and solidifying their place within the 1990s alternative rock scene.
Throughout the years, 311 continued to experiment with their sound, releasing a series of successful albums such as Transistor (1997), Soundsystem (1999), and From Chaos (2001), which further expanded their fanbase. Known for their upbeat, positive lyrics and fusion of various musical styles, the band built a dedicated following, particularly within the rock and reggae-influenced communities. 311's music has continued to evolve, but their signature sound remains a blend of infectious grooves, catchy hooks, and an eclectic mix of genres. With a loyal fan base and a reputation for high-energy live performances, 311 remains an enduring force in alternative rock, consistently releasing albums and touring well into the 21st century.
